Tortugas SPC Rigid-Core Plank starts at $3.99 per square foot installed in Fort Myers — a wide-format walnut-look floor from Neptune’s Maxlp collection built to hold up where humidity and concrete slabs are simply a given. At over nine inches wide and nearly six feet long, each plank reads as close to real wood as vinyl gets. It’s the kind of floor that works hard without asking you to think about it.
Southwest Florida’s combination of slab-on-grade construction, summer humidity that rarely drops below 70%, and salt air near the Gulf makes standard hardwood a risky bet. Tortugas is 100% waterproof through the core, so moisture migrating up from concrete or tracking in from a pool deck won’t swell or buckle a plank.
The pre-attached IXPE backing cushions the rigidity of a slab underfoot and adds a thermal layer — useful in seasonal homes that sit unoccupied through the summer. GREENGUARD Gold certification keeps indoor air quality in check for year-round residents and short-term rental owners alike.

Flooring Queen installs Tortugas at $3.99 per square foot, and that number covers the full scope of a standard job: old flooring removal and disposal, surface prep to bring the subfloor within spec, the material itself, floating installation, new baseboards, and transition strips at doorways.
A few situations run higher. If your slab has significant low spots requiring self-leveling compound, that’s a separate line item. Stair nosing, custom inlay borders, or unusually tight or angled rooms will also add cost. Call Flooring Queen for a no-obligation in-home measure — you’ll walk away with a room-by-room written price, not a ballpark.
Engineered hardwood and Tortugas both deliver a genuine wood-grain look, and at first glance the wide planks look nearly identical. The difference shows up when Fort Myers conditions stress the floor. Engineered hardwood is moisture-resistant at best — a slow leak under a dishwasher or a humid garage slab can still cause swelling at the seams over time. Tortugas’s rigid SPC core is waterproof all the way through.
Engineered hardwood does have one real edge: it can typically be lightly sanded and refinished once or twice, giving a damaged floor a second life. Tortugas cannot be refinished — if a plank is badly gouged, you replace it. For most Southwest Florida households, especially those with pets, rental guests, or ground-floor installs, the waterproof core wins that trade-off.
| Tortugas | Engineered Hardwood | |
|---|---|---|
| Water resistance | 100% waterproof rigid core | Moisture-resistant only; seams can swell |
| Scratch resistance / wear layer | 22 mil commercial-grade wear layer | Hardwood surface; more vulnerable to scratches |
| Comfort underfoot | Pre-attached IXPE pad; slightly cushioned | Denser feel; pad sold separately |
| Installed price | $3.99 / sq ft installed | ~$8.99 / sq ft installed |
| Best room | Any grade; bathrooms, kitchens, slabs | Above-grade living areas; avoid wet rooms |
Sweep or vacuum on the hard-floor setting — skip the beater bar, which can scuff the surface texture over time. Damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner such as Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner; avoid anything acidic, oil-based, or wax-based, as these leave residue that dulls the Shadetech finish. Never use a steam mop on SPC: the sustained heat and pressure can soften the locking joints and compromise the floating installation. Wipe up spills promptly even though the core is waterproof — standing water at the edges near baseboards can work its way under the floor over time. For technical guidance, see the World Floor Covering Association vinyl flooring guide.
Tortugas’s SPC core is 100% waterproof, meaning water won’t swell, buckle, or warp the plank itself. The one vulnerability is prolonged standing water at the perimeter — if it seeps under baseboards and sits beneath the floor, it can affect the subfloor rather than the plank.
The 22 mil wear layer on Tortugas is a commercial-grade rating that resists everyday pet scratching better than most residential-only floors. Accidents clean up without staining since the surface is non-porous. Very large, active dogs may eventually leave fine scratches near feeding areas, but normal household pet traffic won’t show wear.
Tortugas ships with a pre-attached IXPE backing, so no separate underlayment purchase is needed. That pad softens the feel of a hard concrete slab underfoot, reduces hollow-sounding footsteps, and adds a slight thermal buffer — three practical benefits without an extra line item on your quote.
SPC rigid-core construction is specifically stable under temperature and humidity cycling, which makes it a practical choice for seasonal homes. Unlike solid wood or standard vinyl, the rigid core resists expansion and contraction during the months the AC runs on setback mode. Set your thermostat no higher than 85°F while away and the floor should remain stable.
Tortugas is rated for above-grade, on-grade, and below-grade installs, so it works in virtually every room of a Florida home — kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, bedrooms, and living areas. Floating installation means it can go over most existing hard surfaces. The one honest limitation is high-traffic commercial settings beyond light commercial, where the 15-year commercial warranty sets the boundary.
A single room typically runs one day for our crew. A full home of 1,200 to 1,800 square feet usually takes two to three days, assuming the subfloor is in reasonable shape. Tortugas’s Tight Lock / Tap Down system is straightforward and doesn’t require glue or nails, which keeps the timeline tight. Complex room shapes or significant subfloor work will add time — your written quote will note any flagged conditions.
