Why engineered hardwood

Why choose engineered
hardwood?

Engineered hardwood gives you a genuine wood floor that actually survives Southwest Florida. A real hardwood veneer sits on a cross-layered plywood or HDF core, so you get the warmth, grain, and resale value of wood without the cupping and gapping solid hardwood suffers in our humidity.

It is a layered build: the top is a true slice of oak, hickory, or maple — the same wood you would sand and stain in a solid floor — bonded to a dimensionally stable core that barely moves with humidity swings. That stability is why engineered hardwood can go right over a concrete slab where solid wood cannot, and depending on the veneer thickness it can be lightly refinished down the road rather than replaced.

Authentic wood

The warmth and value of real wood

There is no substitute for a genuine wood floor underfoot — real grain, real depth, and the timeless look buyers pay more for. Engineered hardwood delivers that authenticity at $8.99/sq ft, completely installed.

A core that handles our humidity

The cross-layered plywood or HDF core barely expands or contracts as the air goes from dry-season to 80%-plus summer humidity — so your floor stays flat and tight where solid hardwood would cup and gap. It is the wood floor built for slab-on-grade Florida homes.

Care & maintenance

How to care for your engineered hardwood

Real wood asks for a little more than vinyl, but a simple routine keeps it looking rich for decades — and the surface can be re-coated to look new again.

  • Sweep or dust-mop often — sandy grit from the beach scratches any finish
  • Clean with a hardwood-specific cleaner only — never steam-clean or wet-mop
  • Felt pads under furniture, rugs in sunny spots, and steady indoor humidity

Features

What sets engineered hardwood apart

Engineered hardwood pairs the authentic look of real wood with a stable core built for real climates — genuine grain on top, slab-ready stability underneath, and the option to refinish down the road.

Authentic

A genuine wood surface

The top layer is a true slice of hardwood — oak, hickory, maple, and more — with real grain, texture, and depth no print can match. It is the floor buyers recognize and value.

Humidity-stable core

A cross-layered plywood or HDF core resists the seasonal movement that cups and gaps solid wood — so engineered hardwood installs right over a concrete slab and holds flat through Florida’s wet season.

Refresh, don’t replace

Because the surface is real wood, a thicker veneer can be lightly sanded and refinished — or simply re-coated — to erase years of wear. Veneer thickness sets how many times, and we tell you before you buy.

Installation

What’s included in installation

Our $8.99/sq ft installed price covers the full job on projects of 400 sq ft or more — a free in-home measure, a written quote before any work begins, materials and delivery, and everything below.

Professional installation

Certified technicians handle subfloor prep, plank acclimation, the float or glue-down install your product calls for, and resetting baseboards and transitions room to room.

We move your furniture

Furniture moving plus removal and haul-away of your old carpet, vinyl sheet, or tile are included — no heavy lifting and no separate dumpster to book.

Done right, not rushed

Real wood needs time to acclimate to your home before it goes down, so it lies flat for decades — we plan the schedule around doing it right, not just fast.

A few things are quoted separately: concrete slabs out of level by more than 3/16 inch over 10 ft need grinding or self-leveling; wide planks, premium species, stairs, herringbone and custom borders carry added labor; and projects under 400 sq ft are priced per project. Call (239) 763-0770 for a firm number before you commit.

Local expertise

Built for Southwest Florida

We’ve installed flooring here for 20+ years. Here’s exactly how engineered hardwood handles our climate — humidity, slabs, sun, and sand — and the things worth knowing.

Humidity & slab floors

Humidity sits at 80%+ from June through October, and SWFL’s slab-on-grade homes keep floors against damp concrete. Engineered hardwood’s stable core resists the movement that cups and gaps solid wood — the reason it’s the wood floor we recommend here. Keep AC and humidity steady year-round.

Real wood, real limits

It’s genuine wood, so it isn’t waterproof. Wipe up spills rather than letting them sit, skip it in full bathrooms, and reach for luxury vinyl or porcelain in any room that sees standing water. Everywhere else, you get authentic hardwood that lasts.

Florida sun & snowbird tip

Strong sun gradually ages any wood tone, so move area rugs occasionally to keep fading even. If you head north for the season, don’t shut the AC fully off — hold it around 80°F to keep indoor humidity from spiking and stressing the wood.

Beach sand & grit

Sandy grit acts like sandpaper on a wood finish over time. A mat at each entry and a regular dry sweep in high-traffic zones keep the finish looking new — and when it finally dulls, the surface can be re-coated.

Reviewed by Jack Maya, Lead Installer at Flooring Queen — 20+ years installing flooring in Southwest Florida.Updated June 2026

Is engineered hardwood good for Florida’s humidity?
Yes — far better than solid hardwood. Engineered hardwood bonds a real wood veneer to a cross-layered plywood or HDF core, and that stable core resists the expansion and contraction that makes solid wood cup and gap in Southwest Florida humidity. It’s the wood floor we recommend for slab-on-grade homes here. Keeping indoor humidity in a reasonable range with your AC still matters.
Is engineered hardwood waterproof?
No. It’s real wood, so it isn’t waterproof and isn’t suited to bathrooms or any room that gets standing water. It handles normal household humidity and the occasional wiped-up spill well, but puddles left to sit can damage the veneer and seams. For fully waterproof rooms we steer you to luxury vinyl or porcelain tile.
Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
Usually once, sometimes twice, depending on the thickness of the wood veneer (the wear layer). A 2mm veneer can typically take one light sanding and refinish; thicker 3 to 6mm veneers can handle more. Many homeowners simply re-coat the finish instead of a full sand, which freshens the floor without removing wood. We’ll tell you each product’s veneer thickness before you buy.
How is it different from solid hardwood?
Solid hardwood is one solid piece of wood top to bottom; engineered hardwood is a real wood veneer over a cross-layered core. The surface looks identical, but the engineered core is dimensionally stable, so it tolerates humidity, slab-on-grade concrete, and radiant heat that solid wood cannot. In Southwest Florida, engineered is the right call for almost every home.
How much does it cost installed?
Our engineered hardwood starts at $8.99 per square foot, completely installed, on projects of 400 square feet or more. That price includes a free in-home measure, a written quote before any work begins, professional installation, and removal of your old floor. Wide planks, premium species, and stairs or borders can add to the labor, which we quote up front.
How do I care for engineered hardwood floors?
Sweep or dust-mop regularly to keep abrasive grit off the finish, and clean with a hardwood-specific cleaner only. Never use a steam mop or a wet mop, since standing water and heat harm real wood. Use felt pads under furniture, put area rugs in sun-exposed spots to even out fading, and keep indoor humidity steady year-round.
