Downy SPC Rigid-Core Plank starts at $3.99 per square foot installed in Fort Myers — a warm beige floor from Neptune’s Valor collection that reads calm and grounded in any room. The wide 9-inch plank format and embossed-in-register synchronized texture give it the kind of quiet realism that works in coastal homes without calling attention to itself. Flooring Queen supplies and installs it across Southwest Florida.
Neptune Downy is built for the conditions Southwest Florida homeowners actually deal with: concrete slab foundations, salt-heavy air near the coast, and humidity that never really lets up. Its rigid stone-plastic composite core won’t swell, buckle, or gap the way wood-based floors can when humidity swings through an unoccupied seasonal home.
The antimicrobial finish adds a practical layer of protection in kitchens and mudrooms where sandy floors are tracked in daily. The 22-mil wear layer is thick enough to hold up in high-traffic households, rental properties, and anywhere pets or kids set the pace.

Flooring Queen installs Downy at $3.99 per square foot, which covers everything a standard project needs: product delivery, removal of your existing floor covering, minor subfloor preparation, the full installation, baseboards, and transition strips. Old material is loaded and removed from the property at no extra charge.
Some projects run beyond the standard scope. Heavy subfloor leveling, stair nosing, diagonal or herringbone layouts, and custom border work are priced separately. Schedule a free in-home measure and you’ll receive a written quote that breaks out exactly what applies to your space before any work begins.
Waterproof laminate and SPC rigid-core plank look similar on a spec sheet, but the core materials behave differently. Laminate uses a high-density fiberboard core that resists surface moisture but can swell at the edges or seams if standing water sits long enough — a real concern in Southwest Florida bathrooms and laundry rooms. Neptune Downy’s SPC core is inert to water at every layer, not just at the surface.
Laminate does win on one point: it can feel slightly more solid underfoot and produces a sound closer to wood when you walk on it. The trade-off is vulnerability. For any room with plumbing, pets, or direct outdoor access, Downy’s waterproof core removes a category of risk that laminate can’t fully eliminate.
| Downy | Waterproof Laminate | |
|---|---|---|
| Water resistance | 100% waterproof core and surface | Surface-resistant; edges vulnerable to standing water |
| Scratch resistance / wear layer | 22-mil wear layer | AC3–AC4 aluminum oxide; varies by product |
| Comfort underfoot | Pre-attached IXPE backing cushions step | Slightly more solid feel; separate pad often needed |
| Installed price | $3.99 / sq ft installed | ~$4.50 / sq ft installed |
| Best room | Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry, whole-home | Living areas; avoid wet or high-humidity rooms |
Sweep or dust-mop Downy regularly to keep grit from acting as an abrasive under foot traffic — this matters more in sandy coastal homes where fine particles track in constantly. Damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner such as Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner or a diluted Murphy’s Oil Soap alternative formulated for vinyl. Never use a steam mop — the heat and pressure can compromise the locking joints and the IXPE backing over time. Skip wax, polish, or solvent-based cleaners, and avoid beater-bar vacuum attachments on this surface. For technical guidance, see the World Floor Covering Association vinyl flooring guide.
Neptune Downy is 100% waterproof through the entire core — not just at the surface. Standing water won’t swell or warp the plank itself. That said, if water seeps beneath the floor and sits on the subfloor for an extended period, the subfloor can be affected. Prompt cleanup is still the smart habit.
The 22-mil wear layer on Downy is one of the thicker options available in residential SPC, and it handles normal pet nails, dragged food bowls, and daily scrambling well. It won’t scratch as easily as hardwood or thinner vinyl. Cleanup from accidents is straightforward — the waterproof core means no absorption into the plank.
Downy installs well in virtually any above-grade or on-grade room in the home — living areas, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. The floating installation method is well-suited to concrete slabs common in Southwest Florida. It is not recommended for below-grade (basement) applications where hydrostatic pressure from the ground can push moisture upward.
SPC rigid-core plank is widely accepted by homebuyers in Southwest Florida and tends to be viewed positively because of its moisture resistance — a practical concern buyers here understand. It won’t carry the same perceived premium as natural stone or real wood, but a well-installed, consistent floor throughout the home reads as move-in ready, which does support resale.
Downy comes with pre-attached IXPE backing, so no separate underlayment is needed. The IXPE layer reduces sound transmission and adds modest cushion underfoot — enough that the floor feels less hard than bare SPC against a concrete slab. Adding a second underlayment layer beneath a floor that already has one is not recommended and can compromise the locking system.
In many cases, yes — Neptune Downy’s floating Tight Lock / Tap Down click system can install over existing hard, flat surfaces including tile. The key requirement is that the existing floor is firmly adhered, level, and within acceptable flatness tolerances. During the in-home measure, a Flooring Queen installer will assess your current floor and flag any prep work before you commit to a scope.
