Quick answer: Before you sign a flooring contract, get written answers to three sets of questions: exactly what the price includes and excludes, what happens on installation day and who is in your home, and who stands behind the work afterward. Any good flooring company answers all of them easily. The value of asking is that the companies with surprise-heavy contracts answer them badly, and you find out before the deposit instead of after.
We wrote this list knowing full well that shoppers will take it to our competitors. Good. These are the questions we would want our own family asking anywhere, and a store confident in its answers has nothing to fear from an informed customer.
Questions About Pricing and What Is Included
- Is this an itemized written quote? Material, labor, prep, extras, each as its own line. A single mystery number cannot be compared to anything.
- What does the installed price include, and what is quoted separately? Every honest quote has both categories. Ours includes material, standard installation and free moving of normal household furniture, with subfloor work, moisture barriers, transitions and trim, hard-floor demo and disposal, and stairs quoted separately after we see the home. A company that claims everything is included has usually just hidden the extras inside the number.
- Is furniture moving included, or a paid add-on with exclusions? Ask for the exclusion list in writing. Some national chains publish a long one, and it is worth reading before install day, not during it.
- Am I required to buy the flooring from you to get installation? Some big retailers only install what you buy from them, at their price. Understand the package you are actually comparing.
- Are there mileage, stair, or disposal fees that appear later? Later is the operative word. Every real cost belongs on the quote.
Questions About Timeline and What Happens on Install Day
- Who is actually in my home, your crew or a subcontractor I have not met? Either answer can be fine; not knowing is not. Ask who supervises and who you call mid-job.
- What is the realistic timeline from measure to finished floor? In-stock material locally can move in days. Special orders take longer. A specific answer with reasons beats an optimistic guess.
- What does day one look like? Furniture out, old floor out, prep, then install. Ask where the old flooring goes, how dust is controlled, and whether the crew cleans up daily on multi-day jobs.
- What happens if the subfloor needs work once it is opened up? The right answer: you see it, it is explained, and you approve the cost before work continues. Surprises hidden until the invoice are a choice, not an accident.
Questions About Warranty and Who Actually Does the Work
- What does the manufacturer warranty cover, and what voids it? Wear-through and manufacturing defects are covered; improper installation typically voids everything, which makes the next question the important one.
- Who backs the labor, and for how long? The company itself should stand behind its installation in writing, separate from the manufacturer paperwork. If a seam fails or a plank lifts, you want one phone number and no finger-pointing between a store and a subcontractor.
- Will you handle a warranty claim, or am I on my own with the manufacturer? A local store that sold and installed the floor can run the claim for you. That service is one of the quiet reasons to buy locally.
- Can I see reviews from local homeowners? Not a star average alone, actual written reviews from your area. We are rated 5.0 by 100+ verified local homeowners, and we will happily point you at every word.
One theme runs through all three sections: everything in writing, everything before signing. A company that operates cleanly finds these questions boring. That is exactly the reaction you are looking for.
Frequently Asked Questions
A price that cannot be itemized. If a company cannot or will not put material, labor and extras on separate lines, you cannot compare their quote to anyone else’s, and the vagueness is usually load-bearing. Cash-only payment and no physical showroom are close behind.
Yes, and compare them line by line rather than bottom line to bottom line. The cheapest total often excludes prep, disposal or trim that the other quotes included. Two itemized quotes tell you more than five mystery numbers.
Especially there. National chains run installation through subcontractor networks with published fee schedules and exclusion lists, and the store answering your questions is often not the entity doing the work. The questions about who is in your home and who backs the labor matter most in exactly that arrangement.
