Slate SPC Rigid-Core Plank starts at $3.99 per square foot installed in Fort Myers — a dark charcoal floor from CPF Floors’ Spirit XL collection that reads like natural stone without any of the weight or cold. The 9×60-inch planks carry a muted, earthy tone that works in modern and transitional spaces alike. Flooring Queen installs it throughout Southwest Florida with full service from measure to finish.
Spirit XL was built for the kind of abuse Southwest Florida homes actually see: humidity that never really lets up, slab-on-grade foundations that transfer moisture, and the salt air that coastal properties in Cape Coral or Estero deal with year-round. The rigid core holds its shape without buckling or gapping — no seasonal expansion cycles to worry about.
The heavy-residential and general-commercial traffic rating makes this a realistic pick for rental properties, vacation homes, and high-traffic main living areas. The 22-mil wear layer adds meaningful scratch and scuff resistance where bare feet, furniture legs, and sandy floors are daily realities.

At $3.99 per square foot installed, the price covers the full job: delivery to your home, removal of your existing flooring, standard subfloor preparation, the installation itself, baseboards, transition strips, and cleanup and disposal of the old material. There are no hidden line items for those standard steps.
Some situations do carry upcharges — significant subfloor leveling, stair nosing, or intricate layout patterns cost more than a straightforward room install. Call Flooring Queen for a free in-home measurement and a written quote that lays out every cost before any work begins.
Charcoal stone-look floors naturally push shoppers toward porcelain tile, and it’s worth comparing them honestly. Porcelain is harder and more heat-tolerant, and it won’t ever show a wear layer because it has none — the color goes all the way through. For permanent homes without young kids or large dogs, it can be the right call.
That said, Slate SPC gives up very little visually while costing less to install, landing far softer underfoot, and going in without grout lines that need periodic sealing. The attached 2mm EVA pad adds acoustic dampening that bare tile can’t match. In Florida’s concrete-slab homes, that cushion and warmth difference is something most homeowners notice right away.
| Slate | Porcelain Tile | |
|---|---|---|
| Water resistance | 100% waterproof rigid core | Waterproof surface; grout can absorb moisture |
| Scratch resistance / wear layer | 22-mil commercial wear layer | Glazed surface — no wear layer, very hard |
| Comfort underfoot | Softer; 2mm EVA pad attached | Hard, cold — no underlayment |
| Installed price | $3.99 / sq ft installed | ~$8.99 / sq ft installed |
| Best room | Living areas, bedrooms, rentals | Bathrooms, kitchens, covered lanais |
Sweep or vacuum regularly — use a hard-floor setting or a soft brush roll to avoid scratching the wear surface. For mopping, a damp microfiber mop with a pH-neutral cleaner like Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner or a diluted castile soap works well; wring the mop almost dry before it touches the floor. Avoid steam mops entirely — the heat and pressure can compromise the plank’s adhesive layers and void performance claims. Keep chair legs fitted with felt pads to protect the 22-mil surface from concentrated point-load scratches over time. For technical guidance, see the World Floor Covering Association vinyl flooring guide.
The Slate SPC plank is fully waterproof through the core, so standing water on the surface won’t cause swelling, warping, or delamination. Clean it up when you get to it, but there’s no clock ticking. The weak point, if any, is the perimeter seam at baseboards — keep caulk fresh there to prevent water from wicking underneath.
A 22-mil commercial-grade wear layer is one of the thicker options available in residential SPC, and it handles dog nails and normal pet traffic well. Accidents clean up without staining or odor absorption because the core doesn’t absorb liquid. Dragging heavy furniture is the bigger risk — use felt pads under legs.
A single room typically runs one day or less once the old floor is out. A whole-home project — say, 1,200 to 1,500 square feet — usually spans two to three days depending on layout complexity and subfloor condition. Angle-angle installation is efficient, which helps keep the timeline tight on straightforward slab floors.
Wide-format planks like the 9×60-inch Slate tend to make a room feel more open because there are fewer seam lines breaking up the floor. They’re also faster to install per square foot. In smaller rooms, you may see more cut pieces along the walls, but the visual payoff in open living spaces is usually worth it.
Slate Spirit XL comes with a 2mm high-density EVA pad factory-attached to each plank, so no separate underlayment purchase is needed. That pad softens the feel underfoot compared to bare rigid core and reduces the hollow sound that thin SPC can produce over concrete slabs — a noticeable difference in Florida slab-built homes.
Flooring Queen installs Spirit XL Slate throughout Southwest Florida, including Cape Coral and Bonita Springs, along with the broader Lee and Collier County areas.
