Zodiac is engineered oak, meaning it’s a real oak veneer bonded to a layered core — not a wood-look product. Compared to solid hardwood, the main difference is dimensional stability. Solid oak expands and contracts more dramatically with humidity, which is a real concern in coastal Southwest Florida where indoor humidity can swing significantly season to season. Zodiac’s engineered construction handles that movement better, and it can float directly over concrete — something solid hardwood typically cannot do reliably.
Where solid hardwood wins is refinishing depth. A solid plank can be sanded and refinished multiple times over decades. Zodiac’s melamine wear layer limits that option. If longevity-through-refinishing is the priority, solid hardwood is worth the trade-off. For most SWFL installs on slab, engineered is the more practical choice.

Sweep or vacuum with a soft-bristle attachment regularly — grit tracked in from Florida’s sandy driveways is the biggest threat to the aluminum oxide finish over time. For damp mopping, use a hardwood-specific cleaner like Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner or a product approved for engineered oak; avoid anything acidic or oil-soap-based, which can cloud the finish. Never use a steam mop — the heat and moisture can force their way into the seams and compromise the engineered layers beneath. In Southwest Florida, engineered hardwood like Zodiac should acclimate in the installation space for at least 48–72 hours before install. Keep it in the room where it will be laid, with your HVAC running at normal living conditions. SWFL’s humidity can cause planks to expand slightly if they skip this step, leading to buckling.
Zodiac’s melamine wear layer limits refinishing options compared to solid hardwood. The AC4 surface is durable, but it isn’t thick enough to survive multiple sand-down cycles the way a 3/4″ solid plank can. Light screening or recoating may be possible depending on condition, but plan on replacement rather than repeated refinishing.
Real wood flooring — even engineered — generally reads as an upgrade to buyers in the Southwest Florida market and tends to support asking price better than laminate or vinyl in comparable homes. It won’t add dollar-for-dollar value, but it rarely hurts and often helps in mid-range to upper-mid listings.
A single room typically runs one day; a whole-home project in the 1,200–2,000 sq ft range usually takes two to three days. Zodiac’s Click Lock system installs quickly without adhesive or nailing, so the main variable is subfloor condition — any leveling work adds time before the first plank goes down.
It depends on height and condition. Zodiac’s Click Lock system can float over a flat, stable surface, but existing tile that’s cracked, uneven, or raising the floor height above door clearances usually needs to come up.
