Quick answer: Yes, floating SPC vinyl plank can usually be installed directly over existing tile, and in Southwest Florida it often should be, because most tile here is bonded to a concrete slab and removing it is loud, dusty and costs real money. The conditions: the tile must be solidly bonded and reasonably flat, deep grout lines get skim-filled first, and door clearances need to survive the added height. When tile is loose, hollow or badly unlevel, it comes out. Here is how we tell the difference.
This is one of the most common questions we get at the showroom, usually from someone standing on twenty-year-old beige tile they are tired of looking at. It is a good question, because the answer changes the price of the project by thousands of dollars in either direction.
When Going Over the Tile Works
A floating luxury vinyl plank floor does not glue or nail to what is beneath it. It rests on the surface and locks to itself, which means the old tile becomes nothing more than a very hard, very stable underlayment. For that to work:
- The tile has to be well bonded. We tap-test for hollow spots. A few hollow tiles can be stabilized; whole hollow regions mean the bond to the slab is failing and covering it just hides a problem.
- The surface has to be flat, not perfect. Normal grout lines under a quality plank with attached pad simply disappear. Wide or deep grout joints get skim-coated with a leveling compound first, a quick and inexpensive step.
- Height has to clear. A plank floor adds roughly a quarter inch. Exterior doors, bathroom vanities and appliance spaces usually absorb that fine; interior doors sometimes need a trim.
When those three line up, going over the tile saves demolition cost, days of dust, and a dumpster in your driveway. It is not a shortcut; it is the standard method for sound tile, and manufacturers allow it in their installation specs.
When the Tile Has to Come Out
- Loose, cracked or tenting tile. Movement below the floor becomes movement in the floor. If the old tile is actively failing, it is removed, the slab gets checked, and the new floor starts from a clean base.
- Serious unevenness. Lippage you can feel with a bare foot telegraphs through a floating floor as flex and noise. If skim-coating cannot flatten it economically, removal is the honest recommendation.
- Height-critical rooms. Occasionally a room simply cannot give up a quarter inch, most often at sliders and exterior door thresholds.
- You want porcelain next. New porcelain tile is a bonded floor and wants a properly prepared slab, not an old tile layer.
The removal-versus-cover decision is exactly the kind of call that should be made in your home, not guessed at over the phone, which is why the free in-home measure exists. Whoever quotes you without tapping the tile and checking your door clearances is guessing with your money.
