Quick answer: Laminate is a wood-fiber product. Modern “waterproof” laminate has excellent surface sealing, but the joints and the core remain water-resistant, not waterproof, so it fails where water sits: full bathrooms, laundry rooms, lanais and flood-prone ground floors. Every flooring ad in Florida shouts waterproof at you. We would rather tell you exactly what the word means on each product, because the difference shows up two years later, at the seams, where marketing cannot reach.
Why “Waterproof Laminate” Does Not Mean What You Think in a Humid Climate
A laminate plank is a dense fiberboard core, which is wood fiber and resin, under a printed design layer and a hard wear surface. The wear surface itself sheds water fine. The vulnerability is the joint between planks and the core behind it: let water stand long enough to find a seam, and the fiberboard drinks it and swells. Swollen edges do not recover when they dry. That is the peaking and rippling you have seen in older laminate kitchens.
What manufacturers improved is real: tighter locking profiles, sealed edges, surface coatings that improve resistance to household spills. Water-exposure limits and care requirements depend on the selected product, so clean spills promptly and check its instructions and warranty. A waterproof SPC plank does not make the installed floor flood-proof. Our advertised starting rates for select styles are within about fifty cents of each other, but that is not a performance ranking.
Rooms Where Laminate Works Great in a Florida Home
- Bedrooms and living areas. This is laminate country. Compare samples and the approved underlayment for the feel and sound you want, and the realistic wood visuals at $4.50 per square foot installed on select styles are the best value in the wood-look market.
- Home offices and hallways. Laminate can be a practical option, but scratch resistance is not scratch immunity. Follow the selected product care instructions for pet use, chair wheels, furniture protection and grit removal.
- Whole upstairs levels. Away from plumbing and exterior doors, the water question mostly disappears and laminate competes on comfort and looks, where it is strong.

Rooms Where We Would Steer You to SPC Vinyl or Porcelain Instead
- Full bathrooms and laundry rooms: standing water is a matter of when, not if. SPC luxury vinyl plank from $3.99 per square foot installed, or porcelain, is the right material.
- Kitchens, honestly assessed: plenty of laminate kitchens live long lives, but a dishwasher line failure while you are at work is the classic laminate killer. If the budget allows porcelain or SPC, that is our recommendation.
- Lanais and anything outside the AC envelope: heat, direct sun and rain are outside laminate design limits. This is porcelain tile territory.
- Ground floors in flood-prone neighborhoods: water intrusion can damage laminate and the layers beneath any floor. Waterproof SPC plank or porcelain tile does not make an installation flood-proof. Have the affected floor and substrate assessed before deciding what can remain.
That steering is the whole reason to buy from a store that sells every material. A laminate-only ad has one answer for every room. We would rather lose fifty cents a square foot moving you to vinyl than replace your hallway in two years.
